Universal Health Coverage (UHC) means that without financial hardship, people have access to the health care they need. It also helps drive better outcomes in terms of health and growth.
Quality and affordable healthcare are the foundation for people to enjoy productive and fulfilling lives, and for countries to have strong and unwavering economies. The UHC campaign has gained global traction in recent years, with the World Health Assembly and the United Nations General Assembly encouraging countries like Nigeria to step up their efforts rapidly and substantially to accelerate the transition to universal access to affordable and reliable healthcare services.
Universal Health Coverage is the key to achieving the World Bank Group’s (WBG) twin goals of ending extreme poverty and increasing equity and shared prosperity. It is also an essential part of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
One of the Sustainable Development Goal’s cardinal goals has a goal of achieving universal health coverage (UHC), including financial risk security, access to reliable primary health care services, and access to safe, efficient, quality, accessible and appropriate drugs and vaccines for everyone. Therefore, the goal of ending poverty everywhere in all its forms is at risk without UHC, as every year hundreds of millions of people are disadvantaged by health-care costs.
